A man was pulled Friday night from the Maumee River in Promenade Park after he jumped into the water in what authorities believe was an attempted suicide.

According to police, the man put his identification on a post along the waterfront near the former Toledo Edison steam plant, told two nearby people to give it to his wife, and then went feet first about 5:20 p.m. into the water.

The witnesses immediately used a cell phone to report the incident to police dispatchers. Police estimated the man, whose name was not released, was in the water less than 10 minutes before he was brought to safety by firefighters with Toledo Fire Department’s Water Rescue Unit.

He was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for treatment.
