NEW YORK — New York City police say a single-engine plane landed in the surf not far from John F. Kennedy Airport, but all three people aboard are reported safe.

It's not clear what caused the plane to go down at about 7 p.m. Monday in the waters off Rockaway. Two passengers and the pilot were pulled from the plane by police emergency crews. There were no injuries.

Police say the plane took off from Farmingdale, N.Y., on Long Island and was headed west. The destination was not immediately known. The plane was not believed to be headed for the airport.

Police harbor and aviation crews responded to the scene. The cause of the mishap is under investigation.
