Private trash collection in Toledo moves closer after two votes by commissioners

Lucas County Commissioners approved two agreements Tuesday afternoon that will move forward Toledo’s desire for privatized trash collection.

The first vote authorized an agreement for the county to take over the city’s trash collection. The second vote authorized an agreement between the county and Allied Waste Services to handle that collection. Both votes were 3-0.

Under the agreement with Allied Waste, most Toledo residents will see an 80 cent increase to their monthly trash bills. Those seniors who have a homestead exemption will continue to pay $5 a month. Billing will continue through the city’s utility department.

Sixty-six city trash collectors will be displaced by the move, though the city currently is holding 46 other positions for those workers to move into. Allied Waste has also said it will accept applications from the city workers.

The Bell Administration pushed for privatization as a way to balance the city budget.
