Century-old copy of Michigan newspaper found
Issue of Holland Daily Sentinel discovered during Habitat for Humanity renovations
6/20/2011HOLLAND, Mich. — A century-old copy of a southwestern Michigan city’s newspaper has turned up during Habitat for Humanity renovations of a house.
The Holland Sentinel reports that the yellowed, tattered copy of the The Holland Daily Sentinel dated Sept. 27, 1907 was found Friday morning.
Supervisor Dave Smith says an electrician rewiring the house cut a hole in a wall for a switch and found a copy of “Harper’s Second Reader,” a lesson book from 1888, inside the wall. A copy of the newspaper was tucked inside the book.
The home was built in 1919, and it’s unclear how the book made it into the wall.
Highlights of the newspaper include perfume selling for 35 cents per ounce at a drug store and rent on a home set at $12 per month.
