Parts of northwest Ohio, southeast Mich experience brunt of storm

Motorists stranded, tress and wires downed, roads closed, hail reported

A storm that dumped heavy rain on southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio this evening left at least two motorists stranded on their cars, downed trees and wires, and peppered the region with hail.

Adrian fire officials were called to two separate locations at about 5:30 p.m. to rescue two individuals whose cars were stuck in flooded streets, Adrian fire captain Randy Gron said.

Captain Gron said Adrian Fire Department officials conducted a rescue using an aerial truck for a woman whose vehicle was stuck in two feet of water on East Beecher Street so she didn't have to walk through the flood to move away from the vehicle.

The fire department was also called to a man's vehicle on Race Street, but he was already away from his vehicle by the time rescuers arrived. Captain Gron estimated the water was about 18 inches deep on Race Street.

The captain said neither location is near any rivers or streams and neither individual was in danger of being swept away.

In Perrysburg, motorists reported quarter-sized hail and downed tree branches along U.S. 20.

A Lucas County Sheriff's Office dispatcher said trees and wires were down in the Springfield and Holland areas.

She also said parts of Mechanic Street and River Road were closed because of downed trees.

The Ohio Department of Transportation reported that State Rt. 105 between State Rt. 199 and U.S. 23 in Wood County was closed about 7:30 p.m. for downed power lines.

Severe thunderstorm warnings that moved through Lucas, Wood, Ottawa, and Sandusky counties earlier tonight have expired, but the National Weather Service reports scattered thunderstorms to occur throughout the evening.

The National Weather Service estimated, based on radar readings, that some storms dropped 1 1/2 inches of rain in some areas of northwest Ohio and as much as 3 inches in parts of Lenawee and Monroe counties in Michigan.

With additional storms possible tonight, the weather service issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for Lenawee and Monroe counties until 9 p.m. today, and for Lucas, Ottawa, Sandusky, and Wood counties until 2 a.m. Friday. Runoff from the rainfall could cause minor flooding along small streams and near low-water crossings, the weather service said.
