A Monroe man was killed Saturday evening when he apparently jumped from the Veterans' Glass City Skyway after crashing a vehicle on the bridge, having been followed into Toledo by Monroe County Sheriff's deputies.

Dr. Maneesha Pandey, a deputy Lucas County coroner, identified the man as Shane Holey, 31, who she said had been reported to police as being suicidal.

The incident, reported to Toledo fire and rescue dispatchers at 6:01 p.m., occurred on and above the East Toledo side of the Maumee River. Police quickly covered up the shoeless body, which landed on rocks a few yards from the riverbank between the Skyway and the parallel Craig Memorial Bridge.

Almost directly above that scene, a grey cross-over vehicle with a Michigan license plate and its front end smashed in and its windshield wipers slowly swishing sat on the southbound I-280 shoulder on the Skyway with a Monroe County Sheriff's cruiser stopped behind it.

Several Toledo police cruisers and other Monroe County vehicles blocked various lanes during the investigation while traffic slowly filed by on the left shoulder. Delays were minor.

The incident is the first known case of a person or vehicle going over the side of the Skyway since its 2007 opening.
