  • Our Lady of Perpetual Help celebrates turning 100

    Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 2255 Central Grove, hosts author and radio host Gus Lloyd in a one-day mission on Feb. 24. The mission is part of a series of events recognizing the parish’s 100th anniversary this year.

    Mr. Lloyd is the host of Seize the Day, a morning radio show on Sirius XM’s The Catholic Channel, and author of several books, including the popular apologetics series A Minute in the Church. In his presentation on Feb. 24, he will share his own story as well as offer reflections on how listeners can deepen their faith. It begins at 3 p.m. with a presentation on spiritual renewal, followed by a meet-and-greet at 4 p.m., Mass at 5 p.m. and personal reflection at 7 p.m.

    No registration is necessary for the free presentation.

    Presbyter retires

    The Rev. Susan Meier is retiring as presbyter for common life with the Maumee Valley Presbytery on Tuesday, capping a 40-year career in ministry.

    Reverend Meier has headed the presbytery, which covers more than 60 churches in Ohio and Michigan, for the past 8½  years, and previously served congregations in Wooster, Ohio, and in Flint and Saginaw, Mich. She said in a statement that she is fortunate to have loved her work, and that she is leaving the presbytery in “good spiritual shape.”

    “I have complete confidence in our new leaders,” she said. “They are creative, they think differently, they seek authentic connections, and they bring gifts we didn’t even know we needed.”

    Lenten series

    St. Michael’s in the Hills Episcopal Church begins a Lenten series on Wednesday. “Soup and Salad with Neighbors and Friends” runs each Wednesday of the liturgical season leading up to Easter, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a soup and salad meal and continuing from 7 to 8 p.m. with speakers who will share about the beliefs and practices of other denominations.

    These speakers are the Rev. Otis Gordon, of Warren AME Church in Toledo, on Wednesday; the Rev. Mike Fortune, of First Seventh-day Adventist Church in Toledo, on Feb. 28; the Rev. Dave Elkins and the Rev. Regina Wenger, of Central Mennonite Church in Archbold, on March 7; the Rev. Lynn Kerr, of Maumee Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bowling Green, on March 14, and the Rev. Michael Shaheen, of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral, on March 21.

    The presentations are free. St. Michael’s in the Hills is at 4718 Brittany Rd.

    ‘Lessons from Hayti’

    The Commission on Racial Understanding of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio hosts a free discussion, “Lessons From Hayti: Black Entrepreneurship,” at All Saints Episcopal Church, 563 Pinewood Ave, at 4 p.m. Sunday.

    Lessons from Hayti is a 2013 a documentary exploring black economic and political power after the Civil War. Attendees are invited to participate in a round-table discussion on what can be learned from the documentary and how it can be applied today.
