Modernize Lucas County government 

Replacing Lucas County's antiquated government structure with a modern system would dramatically benefit Lucas County and northwest Ohio, argues a letter writer.

Robert R. Larch’s  Dec. 23 letter stated that “We have a great opportunity to move Toledo and Lucas County in the 21st century by combining our government bodies into one.” 

A few years ago I participated in an effort to replace Lucas County’s antiquated government structure with a modern system that would be much more efficient and make officials more accountable. 

After many months of study, including a review of many of the governments cited by Mr. Larch in his letter, the grassroots campaign committee presented a report containing many dramatic recommendations that would benefit Lucas County and northwest Ohio.

While thousands of residents signed petitions supporting this issue, there were not sufficient valid signatures to place this matter on the ballot. 

It is my hope that our committee’s report will be resurrected, reviewed, considered, and adopted. 

I believe these recommendations have the potential to improve the economy and quality of life for our residents.

Construction site invited tragedy 

The tragedy of the four teenagers killing a 22-year-old father from Michigan leaves a huge question still to be asked. 

These prank-proof guardrails are considered absolutely essential for the life or death protection of cars and riders passing below. 

Yet here we have a case where such a fence is removed, leaving a tempting invitation to drop lethal objects onto I-75 below.  

Tempting again are the sandbags lying around, just waiting to be dropped onto the highway. 

The question here is why did no one have the imagination to foresee the potential of the ensuing disastrous outcome of leaving the site totally unprotected?

Blade criticism of Tuschman unfair

James Tuschman has devoted much of his life to improving our community, including through his successful leadership as board chairman of the Port Authority.

Your editorial (“Anybody but Tuschman,” Dec. 28) is misleading. 

It also reflects the fact that a significant reason why many highly qualified individuals do not volunteer to participate on local public boards is the fear of being smeared by The Blade.
