Magdalena celebrates Sylvania's 'Franciscan spirit'

9/10/2012

Historically, the Sisters of St. Francis (OSFS) of Sylvania, OH are the 'heart' of this beautiful growing city.

Founded on December 8, 1916, in 1917 they purchased 89 acres of land in Sylvania and just look at their contributions to our community in less than 100 years! Their sponsored ministries include Lourdes University, Franciscan Academy, Sylvania Franciscan Health, Theatre/Conference Center.

Under their Justice & Peace they work such wonderful programs as Care for the Earth, JPIC Network, Death Penalty, Peace, Human Trafficking, Women & Children, Haiti, Year-Round Garden. Most currently, they have initiated the Sylvania Franciscan Village, integrating the values of St. Francis with numerous ministries that together we can help create a greater sense of community among serving others and the world; i.e.St. Francis Day Village Celebration-Zero Waste (Oct. 4), My Roots Project, Wholistic Resource Center, Rosary Care Center, open to everyone (Mon-Fri., 9a.m.-2:30 p.m.), as well as providing countless lectures, seminars, performances open to us all.

Being an 1984 alumna of Lourdes University and a Franciscan Associate, I truly appreciate all the Franciscan spirit and love shared by our Sisters of St.Francis of Sylvania, OH. They have touched so many lives in so many ways.

Yours in Franciscan spirit,

Magdalena Skiles
