Toledo Speedway driver still in hospital
6/3/2005Late model driver Ron Allen, who was injured in an accident at Toledo Speedway on Sunday night, has been diagnosed with first-degree burns to his nose and face and second-degree burns to his hands and right arm.
Allen, of Lincoln Park, Mich., is in St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where he will remain for several days as doctors continue their evaluation.
Allen credits a newly acquired firesuit, shoes, gloves and full-face helmet and visor with limiting the extent of his injuries.
For most race car drivers, winning 100 feature races is just a dream. But Dick Barker of Port Huron, Mich., saw his dream come true recently when he won a late model feature at Flat Rock Speedway. The victory was his 100th career late model win.
"That race was really fun. A win is great anytime, but tonight's is special," said Baker.
One-quarter of those wins (25), have been at Flat Rock and Toledo - 17 at Flat Rock and eight at Toledo. Barker, known in the pits as the "magic man," was the 1978 and 1980 Flat Rock late model champion,
Barker and car owner Pat Moran have put a passenger seat in a late model car and sell five-lap rides to fans before the races at Flat Rock.
A couple of questions are being asked this season at Fremont Speedway. Will eight-time 410 sprint car track champion Mark Keegan win four more features to tie his uncle Gug (62 feature wins) for second on the Fremont career win list? Can Keegan catch all-time career feature winner Art Ball, who is looking to add to his 66-feature win total as he competes in the Coors Light Dirt Truck Division at the age of 66?
With his win in the recent All Star Circuit of Champions A Main feature at Attica Raceway Park, Chad Kemenah of Findlay became the series' first two-time feature race winner in 2005. Kemenah currently sits on top of the All Star point standings.
Race car driver "Sumo Wrestling" will be part of the card tomorrow at Flat Rock Speedway and next Friday at Toledo Speedway.
Drivers will wear sumo wrestling costumes and will battle for supremacy in front of the main grandstands at each track.
Michigan Mobile Glass will sponsor the show at Flat Rock.
The ARCA late models, street stocks and the Michigan Legends Cars will be in action. The Ford T-Bird Go-Kart Club will stage several exhibition races prior to the racing program. Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing gets the 7 o'clock green flag.
