Newman drives to 2 more poles

FORT WORTH - Ryan Newman won another pole, his eighth of the season and 35th overall, but crashed on his second lap and will have to move to the rear for the start of tomorrow's Dickies 500.

Four-time champion Jeff Gordon was second, followed by Chase contender Matt Kenseth. Greg Biffle, third in the standings for the Nextel Cup Chase for the Championship, qualified seventh.

Later, Newman also claimed the pole for the O'Reilly Challenge 300. He will be going for his record sixth straight Busch Series victory today.

t●MEXICO CITY - A.J. Almendinger won the pole for CART's Mexico City Grand Prix tomorrow with a lap of 1:27.349 at a speed of 114.822 mph. The 22-year-old American took third at the Grand Prix in 2004, when he was rookie of the year.

Owens Community College ran away from Kellogg CC last night to win its season-opener 85-61 in the first round of the Owens Tip-Off Tournament.

Julian Logan led the Express with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Larry White added 13 and DeAuntay Scott and Alex Davenport had 12 apiece.

Owens will face Hillsborough CC today at 3 p.m. in the finals after its 72-63 victory over Gloucester CC.

Cook was at 10-under 134, tied with first-round leader Bob Tway (70), Kevin Na (68), Tag Ridings (66), Tom Pernice Jr. (68) and Jonathan Byrd (69).
