Last Saturday night at Fremont Speedway, 305 cubic inch winged sprint car driver Bryan Sebetto, Fremont, and his crew gave a new meaning to the real estate phrase location, location, location.
After winning his heat in the Third Annual Roots Poultry ASCS SOD 360/Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint Challenge, the motor in Sebetto's sprint car blew up. With no backup motor on hand, he and his crew loaded up their sprint car and drove to the nearby shop of engine builder Scott Gressman. Once there, the crew finished building a motor which Gressman had been working on and installed it in the 01. With a fresh motor in their car, Sebetto and crew returned to Fremont Speedway just in time to start the 25-lap feature. And for the perfect ending to what had to be a made-for-TV movie script, Sebetto won the feature.
While celebrating his win, Sebetto told track announcer Brian Liskai: "My car owner [Matt Poltner] went to watch the World of Outlaws ... he isn't here tonight. He was probably upset when we called and told him we blew the motor. Wait until he gets this next phone call."
I wonder how many other short tracks across the nation ever draw more than 100 sprint cars for a one-night program. The Fremont Speedway pits were packed with 66 360/305 sprint cars and 37 Fort Ball Pizza 410 sprint cars last Saturday for a total of 103 race cars.
DRIVER RECOVERING FROM CRASH: Mark Wilkins, driver of the #157 Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 sprint car, is recovering from injuries he sustained in a crash Saturday at Fremont Speedway. Wilkins was taken to Fremont Memorial Hospital and later transported to the Medical University of Ohio, where he was diagnosed with a fracture of the T-6 vertebra.
Race fans wishing to drop Wilkins a card or note can mail them to: Mark Wilkins, 839 Nutmeg Lane, Findlay, Ohio, 45840.
