Aug. 22, 1988: Allison sheds year's problems with win dedicated to his dad:

Davey Allison took a season's worth of anxiety,

apprehension and sorrow for a ride yesterday at Michigan International Speedway and discarded it along the way in winning the NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Spark Plug 400. Allison tearfully dedicated the win to his father, Bobby, who was injured in a crash at Pocono, Pa., last June.

Aug. 22, 1978: Parrish's 6 RBIs spark Tigers:

Lance Parrish knocked in six runs with a grand slam and a triple as Detroit defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-6. Parrish's first career grand slam came off Twins reliever John Sutton in the seventh and gave Detroit a 9-2 lead. Jack Billingham won his ninth straight game for Detroit.

Aug. 22, 1968: Lammers gains

national golf title:

Terry Lammers of Ida, Mich., who plays at Sylvania Country Club, won the National Open Junior Golf Tournament in Washington, D.C., by 12 strokes over Mike Dixon of Chicago. Lammer's 66 on opening day took medal honors and the Monroe Catholic Central student added a 73 for a 139 total.
