Bishop, Kynard get state honors

Napoleon's Hersha named top coach

Start girls basketball teammates Azia Bishop and Maleeka Kynard were selected by an Ohio media panel for the first team of 2010-11 Associated Press Division I All-Ohio girls basketball team.

Bishop, a 6-2 senior, averaged 16.4 points and 8.9 rebounds while helping Start to an 19-2 overall record (10-0 City League) and its second league title in three years. She will play at Kentucky next year.

Kynard, a senior bound for Ohio State, averaged 14.5 points for the Spartans, who will meet fourth-ranked Kettering Fairmont in a state semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. in Columbus' Value City Arena.

Cat Wells, a 5-4 junior who averaged 13.9 points for Notre Dame, and Miriam Justinger, a 5-11 junior who averaged 16.8 points for Northview, were named to the third team.

Perrysburg's Kelsea Newman, Anthony Wayne's Emma Ricketts, and Start's Jaymie Jackson received honorable mention.

In Division II, Napoleon's Rod Hersha joined Caimbridge's Dan Linscott as coaches of the year. Hersha led the Wildcats to their first Greater Buckeye Conference title in 20 years.

Scott's Macketta Allen, a senior who averaged 15.3 points per game, led the local contingent as District II second-team honoree.

Rogers' Cha'Ron Sweeney and Napoleon's Emily Ruhe received honorable mention.
