Field set for Glass City 200
Past champions highlight lineup for tomorrow's race
9/30/2011A field crowded with champions is set to take part in the Great Lakes Helicopters Glass City 200 at Toledo Speedway tomorrow.
Defending champion and two-time winner of the event Harold Fair Jr. and three-time Glass City 200 victor Steve Sauve headline the star-studded lineup.
The historic race has also attracted Chad Guinn of Monroe, the three-time ARCA Truck Series champion, along with Dakota Carlson of Cedar Springs, Mich., the 2009 Late Model champion at Dixie Motor Speedway.
Mike Root of Grand Rapids, Mich., the ARCA Gold Cup Late Model champion for the 2009 and 2010 seasons has entered the Glass City 200, as has Tim Felver, a Michigan racer and the three-time Owosso (Mich.) Speedway Late Model champion who also won the Glass City 200 here in 1999.
Howard Kelley Jr. of Toledo, the ARCA Sportsman Division champion at Toledo Speedway in 2003, is expected to be in the field, as is JR Roahrig of Indiana, the Late Model champion at Plymouth (Ind.) and New Paris (Ind.) speedways.
Scott Hantz of Angola, Ind., a three-time CRA Super Series champion, has committed to race in this year's Glass City 200, along with Brent Jack of Butler, Ind., the three-time Late Model champion at Angola Speedway who has also won a Late Model championship at Owosso.
Paul Pelletier, a former Late Model champion at Flat Rock Speedway, and Joe Hawes, the Late Model champion at Flat Rock in 1991 who won the Late Model title at Toledo Speedway in 2004, are also in the field.
The Glass City 200 was the creation of ARCA founder and racing icon John Marcum, who staged the first such event in 1968.
The winner was Michigan driver Joy Fair, who won multiple championships at Toledo and Flat Rock speedways in the 1960s and 1970s, and had more than 700 feature wins in his career.
Following the 1977 Glass City race and the sale of Toledo Speedway, the Glass City 200 went dark for a period of 22 years.
It returned in 1999, through the efforts of current ARCA president Ron Drager, Marcum's grandson and a co-owner of Toledo Speedway.
For tomorrow's race, practice begins at noon, with time trials at 3 p.m. and the Glass City 200 scheduled for a 5 p.m. start. More information is available at the Toledo Speedway track office at 419-727-1100.
