Red Wings' Holmstrom announces retirement

DETROIT - After 15 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, Tomas Holmstrom officially announced his retirement from the National Hockey League today at Joe Louis Arena.

Holmstrom, a left wing, played his entire career with the Red Wings, scoring 243 goals and 287 assists in 1,026 career games, and helped Detroit win four Stanley Cups. The native of Pitea, Sweden, also scored 46 goals and 51 assists in 180 playoff games.

The Red Wings face the Dallas Stars in their home opener at 7:30 tonight at Joe Louis Arena.
