Emotional victory for Ottawa Hills
Sometimes, a game is more than just a game.
Friday night at Ottawa Hills was one of those occasions, when the emotion of a tragedy merged with the spirit of teenagers attempting to deal with grief while honoring the memory of one of their own.
The host Green Bears of Ottawa Hills did that, getting some late free throws to take the lead, and then secure it, in a 49-47 Toledo Area Athletic Conference boys basketball victory over 10th-ranked Toledo Christian.
“It’s been a difficult week for everyone here in the school and the community,” Ottawa Hills coach John Lindsay said.
Ottawa Hills was mourning the loss of 18-year-old senior student Brian Hoeflinger, who had died one week earlier in a one-car accident off Edgehill Road after attending the Green Bears’ basketball game that night. Read more...
Bowling Green spoils Anthony Wayne's party
BOWLING GREEN – The Bowling Green Bobcats scrapped, clawed, and ultimately refused to allow Anthony Wayne to clinch at least a share of the Northern Lakes League title on Friday night.
Bowling Green trailed from early in the second quarter before rallying for a dramatic 57-56 victory.
Senior guard Andrew Herringshaw came up with a steal and then scored to give the Bobcats a 54-52 lead with 2:39 left. Herringshaw then nailed a free throw with 07.4 seconds left to give BG a one-point lead. Read more...
Altercations stop Rogers-Scott game before finish
The Rogers boys basketball team led Scott on Friday night by as much as 24 points and owned a 59-45 lead with just over a minute remaining when play was stopped as a result of an altercation between two females in the stands on the Scott side of the gym.
Police officers rushed into the stands and separated the two just before another altercation between two other females standing nearby broke out. A police officer proceeded to scatter the crowd by spraying pepper spray in the vicinity of the altercations.
Play never resumed as fans rushed to the exits, and the teams were led by their coaches into their locker rooms. Many in the crowd began coughing after being overcome by the spray. Read more...
