LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The Blade’s David Briggs is among the Top 10 finalists in beat reporting for sports sections in the 75,001-175,000 circulation category of the 2012 Associated Press Sports Editors contest held last week.

Mr. Briggs, who covers Ohio State University, was independently judged by sports editors and online editors from around the nation. The final top 5 and honorable mention in the category is to be announced at a later date.

His submission of five stories included the Purdue-Ohio State game story; the suspensions of OSU players; athletic director Gene Smith; bonuses for the athletic directors, and OSU President E. Gordon Gee’s involvement in the football-recruiting process. The only other Ohio award finalist in the same beat reporting category is Todd Jones of the Columbus Dispatch.

Mr. Briggs, who came to the Blade in April, 2012, from the Columbia, Mo., Daily Tribune, also placed in the top 10 in feature writing for newspapers in the 30,000-75,000 circulation category in the same judging period. The final top five and honorable mention will be announced at a later date.
