Owens women claim league title after topping Columbus State

COLUMBUS — Emma-Jean Ricketts scored a team-high 28 points to help the No. 20 Express women's basketball team capture an outright OCCAC championship with an 88-79 win over Columbus State Community College on the road Saturday.

Ricketts led Owens with 28 points. She also had 11 rebounds.

Nandi Taylor finished second on the team in scoring with 15 while Mackenzie Heacock was third in scoring with 13 points.

With the victory, the Express improved to 23-7 overall and 10-2 in the OCCAC.

They clinched the OCCAC championship outright, which gives them the top seed in the district tournament March 8-9.

Head coach Mike Llanas captured his 200th career victory, 88 of which have came in OCCAC play.

 

MEN

OWENS 80, COLUMBUS STATE 76

COLUMBUS — James Kelly and Chris Wilson led the Express men's basketball team to a road win over Columbus State Community College.

With the win, the Express (21-8) close out their OCCAC slate with a 10-2 record.

Owens still has a chance to tie for an OCCAC title should Lakeland lose one of its final two games.

Kelly and Wilson each had 16 points for Owens while Joe Retic II added 15 points.
