Owens in 5th after 1st day of NJCAA golf tournament

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — The No. 3 Owens Community College men's golf team shot a 298 during the first day of the National Junior College Athletic Association D-II National Tournament.

Despite bogeying the final hole and missing a one-foot putt, Brandon Hoelzer led the Express with a two-under 70.

As a team, the Express is tied for eighth place. South Mountain Community College is in first place at 284. The Express are seven shots back of third place Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Hoelzer's 70 is good for a tie for fifth place individually.

Blaze Hogan, Luke Berge, and Darren Gessner each shot a 76, while Walter Dorosh finished at 77.
