Former Ohio State star goes on trial in shooting

DELAWARE, Ohio — A trial has begun for former Ohio State football star Jim Stillwagon, who has pleaded not guilty in the shooting of another driver during a suspected road rage incident a year ago.

Stillwagon is charged with four counts of felonious assault in Delaware County, near Columbus. His attorneys say Stillwagon shot at another driver in self-defense.

Police say Stillwagon was riding a motorcycle when he got into a dispute with a pickup truck driver in September 2012. Investigators say that the confrontation spanned 14 miles and that one bullet grazed the alleged victim’s head.

Stillwagon was legally carrying the gun. A defense attorney has contended Stillwagon’s actions were “legally justified.”

The college Hall of Fame lineman helped the Buckeyes to a national championship in 1968.
