Jim Harbaugh threatened by former Michigan player

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was the subject of online threats from a former UM player this week.

ANN ARBOR — Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel communicated Wednesday that he was disturbed by online threats made against Jim Harbaugh and concerned for the well being of the former football player who made the menacing posts.

The former player has not been identified by police, though the posts were made from the account of Elysee Mbem-Bosse (@ElyseeBoss). Mbem-Bosse was a four-star linebacker recruit out of suburban Atlanta in 2016 but left the team in November.

“Always concerned with anything that pops up about a threat and also concerned about him and where he is as a student,” Manuel said. “We care about all the student-athletes that we have, whether they are on the team currently or not. We’re working on it. Everybody in the university that needs to be around this to try and resolve it is, and we’ll continue to do that.”

Harbaugh is aware of the threats, Manuel added. The University of Michigan Police Department and Ann Arbor Police Department are investigating. A spokeswoman for the UMPD said if there was public safety concern a university-wide crime alert would have been sent out, and one was not issued.

Erratic posts on Mbem-Bosse’s Twitter account began Saturday and continued into this week, as recently as Wednesday night. He said he was suspended for taking care of his family during a crisis and made statements about Michigan being an open carry state. Harbaugh’s Twitter handle @CoachJim4UM was tagged in one tweet.

Mbem-Bosse’s Twitter account was public until it was changed to private on Monday, meaning only followers confirmed by the account user can read the tweets, before becoming public again Wednesday.

Mbem-Bosse is still enrolled at UM, according to Manuel, who said the university has attempted to contact him.

Asked if there were previous issues with Mbem-Bosse, Manuel responded, “No, not like this.”
