Stewart, Colbert taking back America one joke at a time

9/17/2010

"...as human beings we are capable of making sense of situations based on the thinnest slice of experience."

Malcolm Gladwell, author of Blink and The Tipping Point.

MODERATES FIGHT BACK!!!!: As Jon Stewart put it Thursday night, the folks on both political extremes -- left and right -- represent only about 20 percent of the populace, max. That means there' s 80 percent of us who don't want to yell at each other just because we might disagree, don't think the world is coming to an end, and aren't afraid of anyone who thinks differently than us. Count Thin Slices in the raging moderate crowd. Stewart and his Comedy Central cohort Stephen Colbert have announced their own rallies in Washington next month, with a pair of separate events that should be good for some laughs while making a bigger point: you don't have to be angry or scared to prove you care about your country. We think they should bring Little Steven in to sing his tune, "I Am A Patriot" (which we would link to, but the Youtube clip has a bad word) so here's Jackson Browne's version. RL

WHAT A TWIT: Thin Slices has never been too fond of John Mayer. His penchant for blabbing about stuff we're not interested in -- namely himself -- has reminded us of Frank Zappa's excellent advice: Shut up and play yer guitar. So John's announced that he's no longer tweeting, and we consider that a point in his favor. Perhaps he's learning to shut and play his guitar. Meantime, Robert Plant is out on the road to reinvention, revisiting one of his previous incarnations and we'd love to see this show. We applaud Plant for sticking to his creative guns and eschewing the Led Zeppelin pseudo reunion route. Without Bonzo on drums it just wouldn't be right. RL

SNAPSHOT OF HEALING: For nine years Judson Box has wondered exactly how his son, a New York firefighter, died on 9/11. The body of Gary Box was never recovered and his family was left wondering exactly what happened to him on that tragic day. Through persistence and a little bit of luck they've finally found out, thanks to a Danish businessman who happened to take a photo of Gary Box in his firefighter gear as he rushed through a traffic tunnel to help save lives in the World Trade Center. A touching story. RL
