buoys-jpg-1

Coast Guardsmen got to work preparing buoys for Lake Erie. Blade photographer Don Flory captured the men getting things ready on March 12, 1979. From left to right are Coast Guardsmen Dava Jones, Michael Lafko, Darrell Banks, and Mark Krainock. The floating buoys were checked at the Bay View Park Coast Guard station in Toledo. The work was part of an annual ritual of preparing channel markers for another year of shipping activity. The buoys were taken ashore late each year, then scraped, painted, and repaired. When the ice was gone from Lake Erie, the markers were dropped in place to guide lake and ocean ships through the western end of the lake and into port.
