Toledo robbery suspect identifies himself by son's name, witnesses tell police

A Toledo man who reportedly identified himself by his son's name during a store robbery appeared Monday before a judge.

Officers responded to an armed robbery at about 8:42 p.m. Saturday at Hungry Howie’s Pizza, 5820 Douglas Rd. Witnesses said a man, later identified as Kevin Leahy, 55, pointed what appeared to be a handgun at an employee.

He said, “My name is Sean Leahy. Give me what you got!” according to an incident report. The employee fled and the robber left without cash, police said.

Police then visited the younger Mr. Leahy, 34, at their shared residence in the 2100 block of Stirrup Lane. Officers said he refused orders to exit the apartment and show his hands. He was arrested on charges of obstructing official business and resisting arrest.

The senior Mr. Leahy told investigators he unloaded the weapon, did not intend to hurt anyone, and needed to pay back owed money, according to an incident report. Officials recovered the firearm used and determined it was a pellet gun.

In an interview, the younger Mr. Leahy said he had no idea his father identified him during the robbery. He described the crime as a “stupid, idiotic thing.”

“To be honest with you, I'm blown away he would even bring me into something like this,” he said.

The two had no problems before this, he said.

The elder Mr. Leahy was charged with aggravated robbery. He remained held Monday in lieu of $75,000 bond.

A municipal court judge initially released the younger Mr. Leahy on his own recognizance. Bond was later increased to $2,000.

An employee of the Hungry Howie’s declined comment.
