Bond set at $2 million for man charged with killing his mother

Bond was set at $2 million today for a South Toledo man charged with fatally stabbing his mother in the home they shared.

Anthony Bertolina, 34, of 3158 Winston Blvd., entered not guilty pleas in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to charges of aggravated murder and murder in the Dec. 9 death of his mother, Mary Bertolina, 56.

In setting his bond, Judge Ruth Ann Franks noted that Mr. Bertolina admitted to having a heroin addiction and had been out of jail on bond from a burglary case in Wood County at the time the new offenses were allegedly committed.

Mr. Bertolina answered the judge’s questions in a clear voice, asking the court to appoint an attorney for him. He said he was not employed and did not own a car or home, although he had an associate’s degree in business with a specialization in paralegal studies. Judge Franks appointed Gretchen DeBacker to represent him.
