Christmas calls swamped the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. long distance switchboard in Toledo on Dec. 25, 1949. About 413 operators were scheduled to deliver the gift of a phone connection. This Toledo Blade archive photo shows one of the afternoon shifts at the telephone company on what was to become the busiest day of the year, in terms of call volume.
