Egypt: VP ElBaradei resigns to protest raids

ASSOCIATED PRESS

CAIRO — Egypt’s vice president and pro-reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei has resigned to protest deadly police assaults against two sit-in protest camps by supporters of the ousted president.

ElBaradei submitted his resignation today in a letter to interim President Adly Mansour. A copy was emailed to The Associated Press.

He says he is not prepared to be held responsible for a “single drop of blood” and warns that violence will breed more violence and the country is more polarized than it was when he took office.

El-Baradei was named Mansour’s deputy for foreign relations last month.
