The mother of an 18-month-old girl whose remains were discovered earlier this month inside an East Toledo garage will not be permitted to attend her funeral, a judge ruled Wednesday.
Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Gary Cook denied a motion filed Wednesday afternoon by Angela Steinfurth seeking a furlough from the Lucas County jail to attend memorial services at Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Homes’ Oregon Chapel for her daughter, Elaina Jade Steinfurth.
Jane Roman, attorney for Ms. Steinfurth, said her client had hoped “to pay her last respects” privately at the funeral home. With the motion for furlough, she included a letter from the Coy Road funeral home stating that it would be able to “accommodate private time for Elaina’s mother.”
Ms. Roman declined to comment on the judge’s ruling, saying she needed to inform Ms. Steinfurth first.
Ms. Steinfurth, 25, of 329 Valleywood Dr. was arrested in June and charged with obstructing official business for allegedly lying to police investigating the June 2 disappearance of her daughter.
Her boyfriend, Steven King II, 23, of 704 Federal St. also was charged with obstructing official business in the case.
The missing person’s case became a homicide investigation after the child’s decomposed remains were found Sept. 5 in a box in a detached garage at the Federal Street property. DNA testing was used to identify the child’s remains, but the Lucas County Coroner’s Office so far has not determined a cause of death.
No one has been charged in Elaina Steinfurth’s death.
An obituary for Elaina placed in today’s edition of The Blade said calling hours would be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday with a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
The obituary did not include Ms. Steinfurth in the list of survivors.
Mr. King, who is being held in the Lucas County jail on $250,000 bond, is scheduled to go to trial Oct. 7. Ms. Steinfurth, who is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond, appeared before Judge Cook earlier Wednesday where a pretrial hearing was scheduled for Oct. 23.
