SANDUSKY - Jeff Slade Jr. carded only a 3-over-par 74 yesterday in the Toledo District Golf Association's stroke play tournament at Plum Brook Country Club.
It was more than enough.
Slade, a two-time runner-up in this tournament, had shot 71 and 67 in the first two rounds. He won by four strokes over Plum Brook's Craig Soule, who finished as the tournament's runner-up for the third consecutive year.
``I actually hit the ball progressively better as the week went on,'' Slade said.
``Today was probably the best conditions, and the best day to score - the wind wasn't a factor, and it was the last two days - but I was pretty tentative over my putts.
``The greens were a little harder and a little slower, and I left putts short that I made Friday and Saturday.''
Slade, the reigning Inverness Club champion, totaled 212 to Soule's 216. Craig Harder of Highland Meadows was third at 220, while Kevin Kornowa of Highland Meadows and Joe Wright of Fostoria CC shared fourth at 225 and Russ Berkoban of Inverness checked in at 226.
Kornowa's 69 was yesterday's best round.
Slade, 29, said he hadn't played much competitive golf the last three or four years - one or two tournaments a summer - but this victory has him planning to play more.
