Division I

Springfield's Durden, BG's Horrigan soar high at state meet

COLUMBUS — Springfield's Manny Durden and Bowling Green's Maria Horrigan shared some things in common on Saturday at the Division I state track meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Both had to scale new heights in their respective field events. Durden the high-jump bar. Horrigan the pole-vault bar. Both executed their craft better than anyone else on their way to becoming state champions before an announced crowd of 14,504. PHOTO GALLERY

Division II

Liberty-Benton's Butler sprints to sweep

COLUMBUS — Despite winning a state championship last season as a freshman, Liberty-Benton sophomore Michaela Butler sought redemption and respect on Saturday. Butler completed her mission when she won two state titles at the Division II meet. Butler captured both sprint events at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. She won the 200-meter dash for the second straight year with a time of 24.86 seconds. Butler also sprinted home to the title in the 100, clocking in at 12.15.  PHOTO GALLERY

Division III

Liberty Center's Atkinson finally a state champion

COLUMBUS — Brittany Atkinson is familiar with being No. 1. The Liberty Center junior is a two-time Division III individual cross country champion. Reaching such heights in track had alluded her in the past. She's been seeking a state title in track for three years.Atkinson checked that off her list when she claimed the 3200 meters race title convincingly at the Division III state track and field meet on Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
