Whitmer held to field goal in loss; Ross rolls past Maple Heights

A Whitmer drive with less than two minutes left ended with an interception in Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's territory as the Panthers fell at home Friday night.

Tyson Smith scored on a 19-yard pass from Evan Henry for St. Mary's only touchdown.

Spencer Hurst added a field goal in the fourth quarter to extend the lead.

Whitmer's Talal Farhan kicked a 26-yard field goal for Whitmer.

Matt Winzeler finished 18-31 with 236 yards passing for the Panthers, while Jamal Bell rushed for 49 yards on 10 carries.

Whitmer held a total-yardage advantage of 321-204.

Birmingham Rice 49, St. John's 7

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. — St. John's managed only 168 total yards in a losing effort.

Alex Malzone threw for two touchdowns for Brother Rice and Shon Powell ran for two TDs. Brother Rice also scored on two interception returns and a kickoff return.

The only touchdown for St. John's came on a 34-yard pass from Nolan Silberhorn to Craig Mays.

Silberhorn was 6 of 20 passing for 79 yards and Collin Korte rushed for 69 yards on 16 carries.

Grove City 38, Findlay 10

GROVE CITY — Running back Corey Williams and quarterback Cameron Meese combined for 207 yards and four touchdowns as Grove City rolled.

Williams finished with 111 yards, while Meese had 96 yards and four scores during a 394-yard output. Findlay was held to 192 yards on 46 plays.

The Trojans’ lone touchdown came on Grant Niswander’s 12-yard catch from Chandler Stillings. Grant McKinniss kicked a 32-yard field goal and an extra point.

Fremont Ross 35, Maple Heights 26

MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio — Fremont Ross got rolling with a big play, took the lead for good with another one, and then sealed its second win of the season on Ben Root’s late six-yard touchdown run.

The Little Giants got out of the gate on Jeffery Barnett’s 87-yard TD return of the game’s opening kickoff. After a Maple Heights' score, Ross took a 13-6 lead on Jarren Hampton’s 31-yard run.

Hunter Trautwein’s 75-yard interception return and a subsequent two-point conversion put the Giants ahead for good at 21-14 late in the second quarter.
