Statue of Liberty still valid?

Now that the U.S. Senate has passed a new immigration bill, it appears that a 12-year path to citizenship for undocumented people still does not satisfy House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio and his fellow Republican lawmakers (“Pressure Boehner,” editorial, July 1).

I wonder whether the Statue of Liberty’s inscription — which says in part: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” — still has any validity.

It is a good thing that the ancestors of Mr. Boehner and his Republican cronies were blessed with the promise of that inscription. Otherwise, who knows whether any of them would be here today if they had been judged by Mr. Boehner’s current standards?

We have workers who won’t work

We have qualified people who can perform field work (“Big tomato grower shuts down this year; Area operator cites inability to get enough migrant workers,” June 20). We just have a lack of people who want to work. It’s way too easy to collect a monthly government paycheck and sit at home.

I want tougher immigration laws. The illegals and companies that use undocumented workers undermine the American economic system.

Americans should get back to work and off the unemployment rolls.

Academy sparks science joy

I recently had the pleasure of seeing my 11-year-old son excited about science because of a program offered through Toledo Technology Academy.

Following a day of observing a science class this year in the Partners in Education program of businesses and schools, I was told of the various outreach programs of TTA to get kids excited about science, technology, engineering, and math.

These programs make learning fun over the summer.

Lucas Co. Fair experience poor

My wife and I took our two grandchildren to the Lucas County Fair on opening day, July 9. It was a huge disappointment to all of us.

The rides were old and dirty. They looked unsafe. The grounds were dirty and looked as though the fair had been going on for a week.

We go to many of the area’s county fairs, and ours is the worst I have seen.

If we can’t put on a better fair, then there should be no fair.
