Letters to the Editor

Library events exclude public

I am disappointed that the two scheduled events to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library are for those who can afford $250 a ticket or are young professionals (“After 175 years, Toledo library’s journey is still epic,” op-ed column, Aug. 25).

I felt left out of the celebration Blade Editor David Kushma described.

It seems there could have been an event that invited the public.

Keep states’ rights to regulate farms

In July, the U.S. House passed a farm bill that includes a dangerous amendment authored by U.S. Rep. Steve King (R., Iowa). The King amendment would take away states’ rights to regulate agriculture.

In Ohio, this would mean the end of livestock care standards and the recently passed puppy-mill law. This dangerous amendment also would limit Ohio’s ability to ensure food safety and farm worker protection.

The Senate version of the farm bill did not include anything like the King amendment.

The House and Senate bills will be reconciled by a conference committee that will include Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio).

Senator Brown should do everything in his power to protect states’ and workers’ rights and public health, and to prevent animal cruelty, by working to remove the King amendment from the final version of the farm bill.

Inmates’ access to ball bats unwise

Who is the brainiac who decided it was a good idea to allow dangerous felons access to baseball bats (“Inmate in Toledo dies after weekend assault,” Aug. 24)?
