Let Toledo lead area’s economy

Your Sept. 21 editorial “Fixing Detroit” said: “Toledo needs to watch and hope Detroit finds a solution that will lead to a rebound.”

Toledo should grasp the moment and be part of that rebound.

More now than ever before, regions will rule in a global environment. Toledo, situated at the crossroads of the North American continent — I-75 and I-80/I-90 — should take a leadership role in the development of our regional economy and its impact on the global marketplace.

Fixing Detroit becomes a chance for the rebirth of Toledo and our region.

Fix Medicaid cost before expanding

The Blade has been beating up on the legislature in Columbus over its failure to expand Medicaid coverage (“Taking control,” Sept. 27).

The legislature has an almost thankless task in trying to make long-term projections about the number of people on Medicaid and its expense. To have a sustainable program, it’s more important to have a handle on cost than it is to open the program up and put it in an unsound position.

I don’t want Ohio to end up like Detroit.

Scandals real, Obama’s phony

President Obama stated last July that several scandals in his administration were “phony.”

On the Fast and Furious gun operation, Benghazi, the IRS issue, and the NSA spying program, the administration has done all it can to hide the facts, distort the truth, erect barriers to halt any investigation, plead the Fifth Amendment at a congressional hearing, and lie to the American people.

And all this from a president who said he would transform politics in Washington through openness, honesty, and transparency.

The only thing phony here is the President.

Let bicyclists use sidewalks

Sidewalks all over the city sit empty waiting for a walker or two. Wouldn’t it make more sense to encourage bicyclists to use the sidewalks for a safer route until we get a good bike trail?

It is easier to teach common courtesy for a walker than it is to bury the dead.
