Letters to the Editor

Politicians need to focus on the young

I am a freshman business entrepreneurship major at the University of Toledo. During a recent conversation with other UT students, it became apparent that no one I spoke with plans on staying in Toledo after graduation.

In fact, three other freshmen already plan on transferring next fall, because they don’t see a future here.

I am a native Toledoan. I likely will have to begin my career somewhere else, because job opportunities are so limited here. I do not see raising a family here with this outlook.

The political candidates and politicians in our area should know that the lack of employment opportunities, along with safety issues and lack of activities, are driving young people away — including me. I hope it is not too late to change the city.

Collins support a disappointment
I am disappointed that The Blade is endorsing D. Michael Collins (“For mayor: Collins,” editorial, Oct. 20). Incumbent Toledo Mayor Mike Bell has done all the hard work — taking care of a $48 million deficit, repairing roads — and now we are told to turn things over to Mr. Collins.

Mr. Collins was a very good Toledo City Council member, but he cannot get my vote for mayor.

Deficit differences, but let’s move on
In response to your Oct. 9 article “Mayor’s race gets hot over deficit issue”: A $48 million deficit or an $8 million deficit, it was a deficit and it was corrected. Move on, fellas.

Inaccuracies worrisome
You daily report significant inaccuracies and misleading statements by your endorsed candidate for mayor. His campaign is funded with contributions from big unions.

I share The Blade’s concern that public officials not be unduly influenced by organizations whose interests may not coincide with those of the public. Please continue to hold all public servants to their duties of public service.

Collins lauded for solving flood woes
Mr. Collins would be a neighborhood champion for all, should he be elected mayor.

As a city councilman, he helped alleviate drainage problems caused by storm water in the Airline-Southview area. Through Mr. Collins’ actions, flooding virtually has been eliminated after major rainstorms in this area.

I intend to vote for Mr. Collins for mayor.
