Good guy with a gun turns bad

I wonder whether the retired police captain who reportedly shot and killed a man for texting in a movie theater would have been considered a responsible, law-abiding gun owner by the National Rifle Association and the corporate gun lobby (“Father fatally shot at Florida theater over texting,” Jan. 15).

I wonder whether he would have been considered one of those good guys with a gun whom the NRA wants to put in schools and movie theaters to stop the bad guys with guns.

I guess everyone is a good guy and a responsible gun owner until you’re not, but by then it’s too late, and lives are ruined.

Gun ownership needs to survive
I am an NRA member. I believe in gun ownership by law-abiding citizens. So many people don’t care about our basic constitutional rights.

It is pathetic how some people would choose slavery to an all-powerful, intrusive big government over the basic freedoms our Constitution affords us.

It would be refreshing to see The Blade stand up for our constitutional rights instead of denigrating them with its bias (“A year after Newtown, deadly status quo too often prevails on guns,” op-ed column, Dec. 15).

Sex-abuse issue comes into light
Columnist Keith C. Burris’ commentary on the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests; its founder, Barbara Blaine, and the horrible way the Catholic Church has tried to ignore the survivors of sexual abuse by clergy, is an honest report (“Founder of SNAP still seeks justice,” Dec. 19).

Will Pope Francis take action? Clergy who are found guilty of sexual abuse should be given prison time, kept away from children, and stripped of their priesthood.

Buckeye not alone with viewer woes
The writer of the Jan. 3 Readers’ Forum letter “Buckeye must put customers first” is not alone in her assessment of cable TV companies. Time Warner Cable pulls similar shenanigans on its customers.

I had a similar problem to the one the writer described. My rates crept up without any rational explanation and with no increase in channels. I got my rate lowered temporarily, but only after meeting with local office personnel.
