UM’s Mattison will get base salary increases

ANN ARBOR — Michigan football defensive coordinator Greg Mattison will receive a base pay increase for the next four seasons.

Starting April 1, Mattison will be paid a base salary of $250,000 through Dec. 31 and an additional $550,000 annually for “consulting, promotional activities, sponsorships, and other services at the request of the University as part of his duties and responsibilities as the defensive coordinator.” His base salary will increase each year: $285,000 in 2014, $325,000 in 2015, and $365,000 in 2016.

A $200,000 “stay bonus“ is offered if he remains continuously employed at UM through Dec. 31, 2016.

Michigan announced Mattison's contract extension March 15 but did not disclose its terms. The Blade obtained Mattison's contract Monday through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Mattison’s original contract, obtained by the Blade, was set to expire Dec. 31. Mattison is now paid a $250,000 base salary and an additional $500,000 annually for the consulting and promotional roles.

Originally, Mattison received bonuses of between $22,500 and $150,000 if Michigan makes or wins a bowl game or the Big Ten Conference championship.

Under the contract extension, Mattison will receive bonuses ranging from $25,000 to $150,000, depending on Michigan making a bowl game, winning a bowl game, or winning the Big Ten title.
