Mud Hens allow 5 runs in inning, fall to Pawtucket

PAWTUCKET, R.I. — The Mud Hens gave up five runs in the fifth inning and suffered a 5-3 loss to Pawtucket on Thursday.

Toledo’s fateful fifth saw the Red Sox send 11 batters to the plate and take advantage of three walks and four hits to snap the Hens’ two-game winning streak.

Leading 3-0, Mud Hens reliever Jhan Marinez walked Garin Cecchini and Christian Vazquez to spark the rally. Corey Brown lined a three-run homer to right to tie the game. One out later Brock Holt tripled, Ryan Roberts walked, and reliever Pat McCoy came on to give up an RBI single to Daniel Nava.

A walk to Ryan Lavarnway loaded the bases with one out, and when Toledo wasn’t able to turn a double play on a grounder by Bryce Brentz, Roberts scored.

Toledo’s three runs came in the second inning, when the Mud Hens took advantage of two errors. With two outs and no one on base, James McCann singled and Tyler Collins walked.

Ben Guez singled to score McCann, and when former Mud Hen Justin Henry’s throw home was wild, that allowed Collins to score. Guez went to third when Pawtucket starter Rubby De La Rosa, who was backing up the plate, threw wildly to try and retire Guez. Guez scored on a single by Daniel Fields.

But that was all the offense Toledo mustered as De La Rosa, who allowed just four hits in 6 2/3 innings, and two Pawtucket relievers limited the Hens to four hits and four walks.

The Mud Hens, who were 4-4 on their just-completed road trip, begin an eight-day homestand today with the first of four games against Rochester. First pitch at Fifth Third Field is set for 7 p.m.
