Debris and trash near 2 Detroit schools target of blight-elimination program

ASSOCIATED PRESS

DETROIT — Dozens of volunteers have taken part in a blight-elimination program near two Detroit schools.

Volunteers today removed debris and other trash from properties near Dixon Educational Learning Academy and Cody High School on the city’s west side.

Detroit Public Schools officials say the goal is to improve safety for students.

Cody student Jhonae Williams tells The Detroit News she fears for her life when she walks through her own neighborhood. She says she “could get snatched up any time.”
