Southern California wildfire 67 percent contained as firefighters make gains

ASSOCIATED PRESS

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — Firefighters have made progress overnight against a wildfire that forced the evacuation of about 1,600 foothill homes east of Los Angeles.

The blaze near Rancho Cucamonga was 67 percent contained today. The southern section of the burn area near homes is no longer active and firefighters worked to strengthen the line on the northern side.

The fire, fanned by fierce winds, chewed through 2,190 acres of dry grass and chaparral, prompting evacuations.

Winds in the area below the San Bernardino National Forest have eased to around 10 mph with gusts up to 20 mph.

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity are predicted for next week.
