COLUMBUS — Perrysburg’s J.P. Newton bounced back from a semifinal loss with two wins Saturday to finish third at 152 pounds at the state wrestling tournament.
Newton, who wraps up his junior season with a 40-7 record, was the highest finisher among the seven Division I area place winners. He opened the day with a 16-11 win over Massillon Perry’s Tony Dailey and followed with a second-period fall in the consolation final. Newton needed 1 minute, 15 seconds to finish off New Carlisle Tecumseh’s Chuck Buchanan.
Perrysburg, with three place winners, finished 13th with 30 points. Clay, which crowned two medalists, was 12th with 31 points. Lakewood St. Edward captured the program’s 28th state title with 117 points, topping runner-up Massillon Perry (105 points).
Newton was one of five D-I competitors from northwest Ohio to lose in Friday’s championship semifinal. Three others — Clay’s Richie Screptock (120), Fremont Ross’ Trey Grine (145), and Whitmer’s Marquise Moore (285) — won their first consolation bout Saturday before losing to finish fourth.
Screptock fell 9-4 to Massillon Perry’s David Bavery, Grine dropped a 6-5 decision to Lakewood St. Edward’s Edgar Bright, and Moore was pinned in 3:32 by Harrison’s Truman Gutapfel.
Also placing were Perrysburg’s Mario Guillen (fifth, 106) and Cale Bonner (eighth, 285), and Clay’s Nick Stencel (fifth, 160).
