Five chefs battled it out recently for the title of “Wood County Throwdown Champion.”
The Wood County Committee on Aging, along with Penta Career Center, designed the Oct. 20 event to raise awareness of the culinary skills of food service personnel who prepare meals for older adults in Wood County.
Guests sampled various appetizers, entrees and desserts prepared by local chefs.
Competing chefs were Dave Napierala of Waterford at Levis Commons; Anne Hodulik of Bowling Green Manor; James Price of Sterling House of Bowling Green; Mike Widmer of Blakely Care Center; and Paul Dauch of Wood County Committee on Aging. Each guest voted for their favorite dishes.
The People Choice Award for appetizers was given to Waterford at Levis Commons for its blue cheese walnut salad; the entrée to Bowling Green Manor for its taco lasagna, and the dessert to Bowling Green Manor for its pecan crusted pumpkin dessert.
The celebrity judges were Ron Matter, superintendent of Penta Career Center; Dan Neman, food editor at The Blade; and Chef Gretchen Fayeweather, assistant professor of Culinary Arts at Owens Community College. After tasting all five appetizers, entrees and dessert the judges unanimously choose the overall champion.
An engraved plate and title of “Throwdown Champion” went to James Price of Sterling House of Bowling Green.
“I thought it was really nice. It was a good experience to see how the standards have been raised in dining for our older adults. I had a lot of fun and I look forward to defending my championship next year!” said Mr. Price, Sterling House dining services coordinator.
The sold-out event had entertainment featured Gene Parker jazz trio.
