Free tax service available Monday through Thursday at Way Library

For two and a half months, the lower-level computer lab in the Way Public Library in Perrysburg is transformed to help people prepare their federal and state income tax forms.

A national program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and AARP provides free tax service for elderly and low-income people.

Hours for the program are Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 p.m.

Jean Boltz of Perrysburg, director of the Way Library tax services, said 64 appointments have been scheduled.

"A vast majority of people are very grateful for the service," she said. "Otherwise they would have to pay for it, where sometimes (filling out the forms) is very simple, (so) it would be a shame to go pay for that."

The service began Feb. 4 and will run until April 11. Appointments are filling up fast. No income level is prohibited from receiving the service, but the volunteers may have difficulty doing the tax forms if the tax return is complicated, or if bankruptcy is involved.

The program has four greeters who take calls and 18 certified tax counselors. The volunteers have to pass an IRS certification test every December and take training classes.
