Perrysburg children got out of the house after a bitter cold on Friday -- and canceled school -- and had fun at the ninth annual Snow Ball at the Way Public Library.

A disc jockey, pretend ice skating rink, and snowball fight with puff balls were some highlights of the family event centered around elementary-aged children and younger.

Library Director Janel Haas said most years the event draws about 500 people.

"It's crazy," she said. "It's January in Ohio, this gives families something to do. They have a blast."

The children's reading room was decorated like an ice skating rink and children walked delicately in circles on paper plates as if ice skating. "It's so cute," Ms. Haas said.

There was miniature golf with about six holes set up, with putters donated by a local miniature golf shop. Basketball, megablocks, paper airplanes, bingo, and other activities made it difficult for children to do each activity in the hour and a half, said Ms. Haas. The ball was from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

It was the first year for the ball to have a photo booth, which had winter-themed props.

This year’s event helped support the local charity Hannah’s Socks. Participants were encouraged to bring new socks and undergarments for men, women, and children.

"We pick a different donation each year," Ms. Haas said. "It is local and has been well supported by Perrysburg."
