This week's color run was one of many successful programs run this summer by Perrysburg recreation.

Jim McMorgan stood outside the door of a Perrysburg recreation classroom this summer and heard “ooh‘‍s and aah’‍s” from children amazed by magic tricks.

“They were actually sitting in total awe of what was happening,” the summer recreation director said. “Their eyes and faces lit up. The look on the kids faces of happiness and content, to me, is what summer is all about.”

The magic show was one of a wide variety of programs the city‘s summer recreation department held at the Municipal Park.

From Disney Princesses to Legos, sports camps, animal activities, and arts and crafts and more happened this summer at the park.

With school approaching soon, the last day at the park was Thursday and celebrated with a color run that had nearly 100 children participating. It also had bouncy houses, a cookout, and some inflatable sporting games.

Mr. McMorgan said the summer was a big success, with about 800 children participating in the programs. Only three hours of program through the summer were canceled by rain.

Two newer programs were Disney Princess and magic shows. Mr. McMorgan said about 60 girls were in their dresses and crowns for the princesses, and the magic shows were well attended each week.

A reason he believes the summer camps have been so successful is the workers. Most are high school to college age students and work with the children, and he has many returning each year so there‘s no new training involved.

“I’‍m really lucky to have the workers I have,” Mr. McMorgan said. “If we had 19 new faces it would be rough on the kids coming back and parents. It makes the program better having them come back.”

Each worker is in charge of several activities and camps, and the workers meet to come up with ideas for the camps.
