In the next few months, the community gardens at 577 Foundation will be filling up with veggies and flowers, but how do you become an owner of a space?

Years of waiting, Vicki Gallagher of 577 Foundation said. It takes three or four years on the waiting list to get one of the 36 spaces.

"We have one person who has held onto a space probably over 20 years, and others around 15-20 years having a space," Ms. Gallagher said.

The spaces are free to the public, after waiting, and all Ms. Gallagher asks is the gardeners are required to give some produce to a food bank. Ms. Gallagher said she is fortunate the way Virginia Stranahan, 577 founder, set up the organization where she does not have to charge people.

"That is the wonderful thing about it," Ms. Gallagher said. "The only thing people are responsible for is their own seed and plants. We even have a tool shed."

So for gardeners that would like a plot, if you signed up for the wait list now you could have a space by the spring 2016 - possibly.
