A salt shortage means only intersections, overpasses, and main roads within the City of Perrysburg will be salted during and after new snow falls this winter.

The city has about 500 tons of salt left, but it won't be spread on roads until after a complete plowing has been done and the temperatures are high enough to be effective, said city Administrator Bridgette Kabat.

Main roads in the city that will be salted, she said, are State Rts. 25, 199, and 795, U.S. 20, parts of Eckel Junction, and places in and around Levis Commons.

Salt also could be used on spots where an icy spot is creating a traffic hazard, the city administrator said.

There is a 30 percent chance of snow throughout the weekend and 80 percent chance Monday, according to The Blade's media partner 13abc.

For a typical snow fall of a few inches, M.s Kabat said, the city would use about 100 tons. But now it will use just under 50 tons.

"We have done this for a week or two and there has been no safety issues," Ms. Kabat said.

The city received their last few shipments for the year from Morton Salt in January.

Perrysburg Township just received 150 tons for Morton Salt on Tuesday to meet its yearly allotment.

"We're in good shape; we have three-fourths of our shed full," said Kraig Gottfried, township's maintenance supervisor. "We have probably about 300 tons on hand. And hopefully we're almost done for the season."

Ms. Kabat and Mr. Gottfied noted that the warmer temperatures in the next several days could create flooding problems in the area.

"It will be nice for the plow guys to have their first weekend off since October," Ms. Kabat said. Before they plowed snow last year, the crews were responsible for leaf pickup.
