Perrysburg Township Police Lt. Jim Pellek announced his retirement Wednesday from the force, where he has served since 1987.

He began his career with the township as a patrolman, was later promoted to sergeant, and in August of 2004 he became a lieutenant. He was paid $38.06 a hour plus any overtime and his last day will be Sept. 30. He said he has 29 working days left, but who's counting?

"A lot of [my decision to retire] had to do with the pension changes and losing the pension was a big factor," he said. "I've been here since I was right out of college and basically grew up here."

Lieutenant Pellek said he did not want to disclose his plans for working in the future. But did say he's excited to relax and watch some Ohio State Buckeyes college football and Detroit Tigers baseball.

"We hate to see you leave," said Gary Britten, township trustee. "You've always been very valuable to the department."

Police Chief Mark Hetrick, who retired in December only to be rehired two months later, said Lieutenant Pellek will certainly be missed.

Also at the department head meeting, the regularly scheduled trustee meeting for Aug. 21 was canceled. Township Administrator Walt Celley, and township fiscal officer Shirley Haar, wouldn't be available for the meeting and nothing was scheduled for the agenda. Because of summer scheduling, that was the only planned trustee meeting this month.
