The band was blaring. The students were cheering. But there was something else needed at the pep rally today at Perrysburg High School for its girls soccer state championship team:

More cowbell.

Star player Maddy Williams rang one of the black-painted bells parents had decorated for the players through the season.

"They were good luck, I guess," she said.

There was a fair amount of skill involved too in the Yellow Jackets' undefeated season (23-0) that ended in the first girls soccer crown coming to northwest Ohio.

Perrysburg beat Mason 1-0 on Friday on a penalty kick from Williams.

"They have a good work ethic," said Perrysburg senior Josh Kemp. He knows just how much work it takes, being on the boys soccer team.

Boys soccer made a run at the Division I state title in 2001, finishing as runner-up. It's been since the 1991 softball team that a school sport added the ultimate trophy to the school case.

"It was a pleasure coaching them," co-coach Jorge Diaz said of this year's soccer team.

Perrysburg Mayor Nelson Evans, a 1972 graduate of Perrysburg High School, and board of education member Barry Van Hoozen were among the city dignitaries who offered the team congratulations on behalf of the entire community.
